Phila. Eagles Fight Song Makes no Sense November 29, 2009

Posted by Master Shake in General blog.

I love the Eagles almost as much as I hate them. The ecstasy and agony of watching the Phillies win and lose a world series is nothing compared to the utter anguish of watching the Eagles week in and week out, followed by the inevitable “that was my responsibility” and “we need to do a better job” post-game speech that Big Red has given after every loss (and win) for lo these many seasons.

Which brings me to the Eagles “fight song”. This is a relatively new concoction, in the vein of the Washington’s “Hail to the Redskins”, but with that peculiar Philly flair for butchering (in this case, metaphoric) language. It goes a little something like this:

Fly Eagles Fly, On The Road To Victory.
Fight Eagles Fight, Score A Touchdown 1-2-3.
Hit ‘Em Low.
Hit ‘Em High.
And We’ll Watch Our Eagles Fly.
Fly Eagles Fly, On The Road To Victory.

Of course you need to add-in the iconic Philly accent for a more realistic experience.

Have you spotted the gaffe? WHY ARE THE EAGLES FLYING ON A ROAD? To victory, no less?

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate literally and figuratively to have the Eagles “fly on the wings of victory”? It makes me cringe every time I hear that the Eagles are going to fly down a road. And not necessarily to victory, either.

That is all.

I don’t know much about Philly, except they booed Santa Claus at the Vet and “It’s Always Sunny…” is a reality show, but at least they have traditions like these goofy songs.

You know what kind of traditions we Carolina Panthers fans have?

We sit at the bar at TGI Fridays and take Jagermeister shots everytime DelHomme throws an interception. By the middle of the third quarter everyone is hammered and Bubba’s girlfriend jumps on the bar and tries to take her pants off over her head.

After the guys in the vests give us “the bum’s rush,” we stand by the road shouting obcenities and Gang of Four lyrics at the cops driving by…

Then we go to work the next day.

…and by the way, I hear we in Myrtle Beach are getting a NPSL team sometime in the next two years. But if you look at their website, ( http://www.myrtlebeachfc.com ) you’ll see why I am not buying any flags or trumpets yet…

My favorite comment ever, on any site, anywhere…

The Eagles make no sense. Why should their fight song?

On the Myrtle Beach FC … here is the link to their Facebook page ( http://bit.ly/7V9Hxd ) I invite everyone to join and watch what could turn out to be a historic event of ineptitude paralleled by only by the Buchanan administration. Everything from their abandoned, never-completed website to their sad Microsoft Paint black-and-pink logo screams “We aren’t going to make it!”

But I hope they do.
